Final DP Update
Generating Ideas
During this year of Algebra I have used my skill of formulating a plan. This has most significantly been shown through my POWs which require a plan of how to execute the problem before we start solving it. I have also grown to use this skill while working on a project in math to make a solid plan which will help guide me through the process.
As I have gone about my year I don’t believe I have grown in the way of generating multiple ways of approaching problems. I still believe this is a weakness because while I work on homework I have always tried to use just one way of solving a problem. If I found myself stumped I would usually just leave the problem blank until we discussed it in class the next day.
Communicated thinking in a clear and accessible way
A large strength that I have built on this year has been being able to respond to ideas from others and asking clarifying questions in our homework group discussions or from Dan. My biggest piece of evidence that I can give you is my khan academy assignments. For a select few of them yes I did fall behind. But in order to get back on track and fully understand the problems I needed to complete I had sat down with Dan a few times and ran through them with him while I would ask questions when I needed to.
I did have a hard time with restating a problem to help make it more clear. Part of the reason I had troubles with this was because I didn’t necessarily know how to do that. Although most of my peers knew how to use this skill I was mostly stumped and ended up always asking for help.
Recognizing and resolving errors
As the year went on I believe that I began to for new ideas from a logical error. This was shown through my project at the end of the year which was creating an electric skateboard with Eli Cagan. As we started the construction we ran into multiple problems with constructing our motor and how we would attach it to the wheels to make it move. As we discovered these problems we had to work together as a team to brainstorm multiple ideas which may work as a solution. Our final product was not necessarily complete but our goal was clear and we had something to show for it!
A weakness that I had was completing my problems with an incorrect answer and believing it correct. In our group discussions I would try to explain why my answer was correct but most often find out that I could not come up with an explanation. Sometimes I would rush the homework and forget a step or just simply do it totally wrong. To get past this problem I would look back at my work and first check if it was correct y showing it to peers or possibly Dan, then come up with a brief explanation to how I got to the final answer.
Reflecting and synthesizing
A way that I grew this year from a weakness was being able to connect the content to the outside world. I believe this is now one of my strengths because of the content that was given to us and the way that as I started to get into our subjects the more I saw how it applied outside of the classroom walls. I remember our class learned about exponential growth and decay which we also looked at how it tied into bank accounts. This was a clear connection to the real world and a subject that I was quite interested in given the fact that I will soon be off on my own and need all the knowledge I can get about finances!
Towards the end of the year my skills of making rules based on examples withered off as I can back from Christmas break. While learning new content I fell behind trying to understand the formulas and what steps I need to take first to complete a problem. An example of this would be my homework assignments which were very challenging given that I kind of spaced on the knowledge needed to complete my problems.

DP Update
Master Skill:
The topic I think I have mastered this year was factoring perfect square trinomials. Even though this was a topic explored at the end of this semester I feel like this was a very easy subject for me to wrap my head around and fully understand.
The topic I think I have mastered this year was factoring perfect square trinomials. Even though this was a topic explored at the end of this semester I feel like this was a very easy subject for me to wrap my head around and fully understand.
To start of this subject we were expanding binomials which in Exploration 18 I had done well be I still needed help to correctly expand each problem.
This example from Exploration 19 I was told to figure out what binomial the equations were a square of. The way this activity helped me learn this subject by squaring binomials. By the time we were doing Exploration 21 I was able to correctly identify and factor each trinomial without a challenge! |
Problem Solving:
A skill that I have grown upon this year was my ability to write down key factors/values of a problem which will help me later quickly get information I need to correctly finish a problem. This skill can easily be applied through everyday life not just math class like taking notes will give a simple and small explanation rather than going through a whole lecture, it is quick and easy.

Like in Pow 7 and every other Pow we had to take the key values from the story to make an easy way of getting the values without having to read the story over and over.
Another skill I have learned this year is to write out my steps that I took to ensure I didn’t make a mistake and I was going on the correct path to finishing the problem. Like in Pow 7 I was required to write down the steps used for solving the problem. |
